Joshua Herwig
Joshua Herwig is a versatile cellist, improviser and composer who distinctively blends his classical and jazz training. Joshua started playing the cello at the age of five. He played in the Britten Jeugd Strijkorkest from the age of ten, where he was leader of the cellos between 2016 and 2019. Joshua has won several prizes at classical competitions, including a 1st and 3rd prize at the Princes Christina Concours and a 2nd prize at the Herman Krebbers Concours.
Nowadays he combines different sound worlds creating a myriad of possibilities and colors on the cello. In his adventurous and mystical compositions he draws inspiration from people like Brad Mehldau, Lorenzo Bernini, Sergei Prokofiev, Maurice Ravel and Miles Davis. Joshua has collaborated with among others, Markus Stockhousen, Oene van Geel, Vince Mendoza, Ben van Gelder, Jeroen van Vliet, Daniel Rowland and Karina Cannelakis.
In 2016, he founded “WOODCRAFT” together with four longtime friends. A groundbreaking string band that explores the boundaries and beyond of the cello and violin. In 2022, Woodcraft won both the First Prize and the Audience Award at the "Dutch Jazz Competition" at the Bimhuis. In March 2025 Woodcraft released their second studio album “EQUINOX”.
With the trio “Moon Garden” he won the Young makers Prize in 2024.
Joshua studied jazz and classical cello with Mick Stirling, Ella van Poucke, Jeffrey Bruinsma and Clemens van der Feen at the Conservatory of Amsterdam.
