Joshua Herwig
Joshua Herwig (2000) is a versatile cellist, performer and composer whose love for music began to blossom at an early age in a home full of melodies and inspiring musicians. Joshua started playing the cello at the age of five. He played in the Britten Jeugd Strijkorkest from the age of ten, where he was leader of the cellos between 2016 and 2019. Joshua has won several prizes at classical competitions, including a 1st and 3rd prize at the Princes Christina Concours and a 2nd prize at the Herman Krebbers Concours. Furthermore, Joshua collaborated with inspiring musicians such as Ella Zirina, Vince Mendoza, Daniel Rowland and Karina Cannelakis.
Composition
From an early age, Joshua had a great love for composition and improvised music. This led to composing his own music. His music brings together elements from jazz, classical and folk music. Joshua is inspired by composers and artists such as Brad Mehldau, Lorenzo Bernini, Sergei Prokofiev, Maurice Ravel and Miles Davis.
Woodcraft
In 2016, Joshua founded “WOODCRAFT” with four friends and string heroes. An ensemble with which he travels a lot and composes for. For him, this ensemble is a place of freedom and experiment, where he can bring his adventurous and absurdist compositions to life with a great groove.
In 2022, Woodcraft won both the First Prize and the Audience Award at the "Dutch Jazz Competition" in the Bimhuis. Their debut album "WOODCRAFT" was released in April 2023.
Joshua studies classical and jazz cello with Mick Stirling, Ella van Poucke and Jeffrey Bruinsma at the Conservatory of Amsterdam.
